2024 Darren Huttel Award

The Xtrac annual award presentation took place on Friday 17th January 2025 and the first to be presented was the Darren Huttel award. This was created in memory of a former well-loved Xtrac employee who suddenly and unexpectedly passed away at aged 35 in September 2005. Darren worked in Xtrac’s build shop for four years and had begun his career as an apprentice, so the Darren Huttel Award for apprentices was created.

The award is open to all current Xtrac apprentices, and the voting criteria for the award takes into consideration quality of college work and overall performance and conduct both at work and at college.

The winner of the 2024 Darren Huttel award is Teagan Kell, a 1st year machining apprentice recognised for her exceptional attitude, commitment, and contributions. Teagan’s passion for learning has driven her to excel in her role, support teams across plant 1, and complete five BGA courses. She also helped secure the third Princess Royal Training Award and took on initiatives like reverse mentoring and advocating best practices. Teagan’s impactful efforts make her a deserving receiver of this prestigious award.

This year’s runner up was Tom Aram. Tom has completed his six-year degree apprenticeship, progressing from Level 3 to earning a First-Class degree and working towards IEng accreditation with the IMechE. Alongside his academic achievements, Tom has taken on roles such as Mental Health First Aider and STEM Ambassador, consistently seeking opportunities for growth and progression.

Congratulations to Teagan and Tom for their well-deserved recognition and thank you to all Xtrac apprentices who continue to contribute to the company’s success.
