Systems Engineer

Working in the R & D Department which is part of Advanced Engineering, and reporting to the Head of R & D, the successful candidate will be responsible for the specification, installation, commissioning, calibration and support of transmission control systems in conventionally powered, hybrid and electric road and race vehicles.

Your responsibilities will include providing day to day control system and electronics support to the engineering group and to liaise and co-ordinate Xtrac’s control system use with control system providers.

You will prepare project specifications, budgets and timescales to the Head of R & D, and undertake research, tests, evaluations, and calibration to control systems and test instrumentation.  You will also create test procedures, analyse, calculate and interpret data and produce written reports for internal and external customers.

You will advise and provide technical support to multiple project teams. You will use control based languages and routines relevant for the operation and analysis of transmission systems.

You will be required to undertake basic CAD modelling and drafting on Unigraphics 3D CAD to Company standards and procedures and to create Engineering Drawings and issue to the required standard.

You should be educated to at least degree level in electrical, electronic, mechanical / mechatronics engineering, computing or applied physics (preferably incorporating engineering subjects), with post qualification experience gained in a systems engineering based role in an automotive environment.  Excellent IT skills in Microsoft Office packages are a pre-requisite.
                                                                
Knowledge of control theory and electro mechanical control systems, electronic instrumentation, automotive sensors and actuators, and Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol experience is essential with mathematical modelling and simulation, vehicle calibration procedures, programming languages, OBD (Diagnostics such as OBD II signal Protocols, KW2000 etc and FMEA knowledge being desirable.

A knowledge of Automotive and Motorsport control and data acquisition systems such as Atlas, PI Toolbox and Motec and knowledge of analysis and simulation tools such as Matlab and Simulink would also be desirable.
                                                                                               
Your previous experience should include; safety circuit design, PLC control systems, AC & DC motor control (inverters & servo drives), digital & analogue sensor technologies & connectivity and HMI connectivity. CAD experience and knowledge (ideally Unigraphics) is advantageous.

The ability to work in a pressurised environment whilst adhering to tight deadlines is essential along with the ability to manage and prioritise your own workload.

You should have a flexible approach and excellent communication skills to ensure a good working relationship with technicians, in-house engineers and customers alike.

Full training will be given where required.
